Festival de Cannes

Cannes, France

With the 71st season about to get underway, the international Festival de Cannes is one of the world’s most widely publicized events and certainly the most important film festival in terms of worldwide impact.

Cannes has been selectively showing virtual reality films such as CARNE y ARENA, an adaption from true accounts. The movie is a virtual reality installation in three acts where the superficial lines between subject and bystander are blurred and bound together, allowing individuals to walk in a vast space and thoroughly live a fragment of the immigrant’s personal border crossings.

Since its inauguration in 1946, the Festival de Cannes has always celebrated a passion for film.

Throughout the years, the constant increase in participants and new economic issues have made the Festival the annual meeting place for film industry professionals.

That is how the first Marché du Film came to be in 1959 with a few dozen participants and one screening room made out of fabric stretched across the top of the old Palais Croisette. This tiny market became the international event it is today: conceived, organized, and planned around one goal: the successful production of all films.

Is there more history about the Marché specifically that we could put here?

50 years later, the Marché attracts 12,000 participants who use this unique environment to debut and discover nearly 1,400 films and projects in 33 screening rooms.

After the opening of Riviera in May 2000, followed by Lérins a few years later, a formitable  hub for the film industry was created around the famous Palais des Festivals and the “Village International” (where it became known as the place to promote international film). This evolution allowed the Marché du Film to host more and more visitors every year.

Every year in May, Cannes becomes the largest trade hub for the film industry. The Marché du Film is a vital meeting point for 12 400+ industry professionals – including 3 900 producers, 3 300 buyers and distributors and 1 000 festival programmers -, a place to meet peers from around the world and boost your business opportunities.

The global leadership of Marché du Film de Cannes strives to serve the industry as best it can by anticipating the needs of the industry, adapting its tools to meet new market standards, fostering new partnerships, and contributing to the economic health of the film industry.
